How can i start designing

Designing is a art where you can be creative and unique in expressing your thoughts. The way of expression of your art can be done with a pen and paper, in olden days. As technology develops different methods have been introduced to bring our creativity to life as digital arts. We teach you the method of designing in photoshop where your can be so expressive and unique.


Photoshop is an user friendly magical software used by current generation to create their digital works. Even for a beginner its very easy to create a design in it. Most of the graphic design works are been designed in photoshop only.

Now we can learn about Photoshop CS3starting from the workspace, tools, documents, file types, colors and resolution.

A default workspace of photoshop software include

  • A. Menu Bar - organizes commands under the menus

  • B. Option Bar/ Control Panel- shows options for the currently selected tool

  • C. Tools- contains tools for creating and editing your work in photoshop

  • D. Panels- help you to monitor your work and modify it. Even the panels can be docked and undocked by dragging on its tab.

File Menu

To open an existing document, go to file menu – open (Ctrl+O). In Photoshop different format of files can be opened like psd, jpg, png, tiff, eps, etc in a new window. Even quick time movie formats like mpeg, avi, mov, etc can also be opened.

To save a document
, go to file menu- save (Ctrl+S). As default, a document get saved as photoshop format PSD even can be saved as eps, jpg, gif, etc.

To place a document or image
, go to file menu – place. Different format of files can be placed in an existing document. Also can place a illustrator or vector based file to be placed as smart object which can be scaled and transformed without any loss of resolution of the object.

To import a file - go to file menu – import. The different file which can be imported into photoshop are

  • Video like mpeg, avi, etc can be imported as layers

  • Windows Image Acquisition(WIA) are images which imported from certain digital cameras using WIA support. This option is available only in windows.

  • Annotation images can be imported in the PDF format. It helps in reviewing comments, notes or any information about the images or work.

Edit Menu


Transform tool helps in editing an image either by rotating, scaling, changing the angle and perspective, etc.

Define brush preset- helps in creating an brush with an image. To create a brush -

  • Select an image
  • Go to file > define brush preset
  • Name the brush. If a coloured image is selected it will be converted to grayscale mode.

Edit menu also contain the option for keyboard shortcuts (Alt+Shft+Ctrl+K) where the shortcuts for all tools can be customized.

Menus helps in hiding and coloring a menu item.

Image

Mode – different color modes used in photoshop.
  • RGB
  • CMYK
  • Bitmap
  • Lab
  • Grayscale
  • Indexed color
  • Multichannel

RGB mode – Red, Green, Blue (Additive colors). Adding equal part of red, blue and green will give white and lack of these 3 colors result in black. Here red, blue and green color ranges from 0-256.

CMYK mode – Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & Black (subtractive colors). Its used in printing field.

Bitmap mode - It uses only 2 colors either black/white to represent the pixel of an image. These images are also known as bitmapped 1-bit images for their bit depth of 1.

Lab – based on human ability of observing the colors.

  • L range from 0 to 100
  • a (green-red axis) range from -128 to 127
  • b (blue-yellow axis) range from -128 to 127

Grayscale – images are viewed in different shades of grey.

  • In 8 bit images, there will be 256 shades where brightness ranges from 0(black) to 255(white)
  • In 32 bit images, the number of shades are greater than the 8 bit images.

Indexed color – produces 8 bit images upto 256 colors. Here the colors are limited which reduces the file size yet maintain the visual quality for multimedia presentation, web pages, etc.

Multichannel – images contain 256 shades of grey. It is specialized in printing.

Adjustments – adjust the color, brightness and various other factors of an image. (can see in detail later)

Duplicate – make a copy of a selected document as a new document.

Apply image – combine one image’s layer and channel with a layer and channel of an active image. (destination)

  • Go to image > apply image
  • Select the source image, layer and channel to be combine.
  • Tick preview option to view the result of the image.
  • To get negative of the selected channel, tick the invert option in the apply image and click ok.

Calculations – blend two individual channels either from one or more source images.

  • Go to image > calculation
  • To preview the result of the image, select preview option.

Image size – displays the width and height of the document in pixels and in different units.

  • Changing the size affects both the size of the document and quality of image.
  • Go to image > image size
  • Constrain proportions maintain the current ratio of pixel width to its height. It update the width when height is change and vice versa.

Canvas size – editable area of an image. Increasing the canvas size adds space around the existing image.


  • Go to image > canvas size.
  • If you increase the canvas size with a transparent, the added space will be transparent.
  • Relative option - add /subtract canvas from the image. Entering an positive number, increase the canvas area and negative number, decrease the canvas area.

Pixel aspect ratio – defined as ratio that describes the width of a pixel of an image.

  • Go to image > pixel aspect ratio, choose the pixel aspect ratio which is suitable for the video.
  • Go to image > custom pixel aspect ratio. Enter the number in factor, name and save the pixel aspect ratio.
    • Delete pixel aspect ratio – delete an item from pixel aspect ratio.
    • Go to image > delete aspect ratio
  • Reset pixel aspect ratio – reset the pixel aspect ratio to default with/ without the custom values.
    • Choose Append to replace the current pixel aspect ratio with default value and custom pixel aspect ratio.
    • Choose OK to replace the current pixel aspect ratio to default pixel aspect ratio only.

Rotate canvas – rotate the document either in clockwise/counterclockwise direction.

  • Go to image > rotate canvas
  • 180° - rotate the image a half run.
  • Rotate 90° CW – rotate the image a quarter turn in clockwise direction
  • Rotate 90° CCW – rotate the image a quarter turn in counter /anticlockwise direction.


Trim – can crop a document either in one side or all four sides of the document.

  • Go to image > trim
  • Select any option from trim away to mention the sides of the document to be trimmed
